Reading the signs and symptoms

Reading the signs and symptoms
- Child neglect is defined as negligent treatment, including failure to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter or medical care; or placing a child at an unreasonable risk to the child’s health or welfare by failing to intervene to eliminate that risk when a person is able to do so and has, or should have, knowledge of the risk.
Bob Wheaton, spokesman for the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services, said CPS investigated 1,564 suspected child abuse and neglect cases in 2016 in Berrien County alone. Of those, 533 cases were confirmed. Cases can have more than one victim, so the number of actual victims is higher.
Of the 533 cases, 131 were Category I, the most serious. In these cases, CPS will petition the court to order the child or children into foster care.
